Biodesign Philosophy ONLINE | 4 Week Seminar

What happens when design meets living systems—and how do we think about the responsibilities that come with it? This four-week seminar invites you to slow down, read together, and explore the philosophical side of biodesign.

Each Sunday evening we’ll gather online for lecture and discussion on contemporary debates in biodesign philosophy. Each week there wil be readings ranging from philosophy and ethics to ecofeminism and nature writings, case studies of new biodesign technologies and practices for working with living organisms —giving us lots of perspectives to draw on.

This will be an international class spanning students from multiple countries, industries, and backgrounds allowing for a broad range of ideas on what biodesign is and what it should be.

During the seminar, you’ll have the option (if you’d like!) to write a short piece on a current question in biodesign philosophy, with feedback from the instructor. This is a chance to develop your own voice in the conversation of biodesign philosophy, but completely optional to all students.

Meet your Instructor

Kirsten Tingle is a biodesigner and artist specialising in mycelium fabrication and regenerative painting. She is a mycelium researcher and lecturer at Lifefabs in Camden, and frequently guest lectures on biodesign philosophy practice across the UK and Europe. Kirsten co-hosts Biodesign Now, the UK's first Biodesign podcast.

Kirsten was a 2024 grant recipient from The British Mycology Society, an artist in residence at The Francis Crick Institute, and holds a masters in Biodesign from Central Saint Martins.

In her freetime Kirsten builds avant garde compost systems, bakes bread, and runs dinner parties for eco focused designers.
